For a number of years at Thanksgiving a community group would organize a “Turkey Shoot.” The Turkey Shoot would be set up on the ball diamond which once existed behind the Community Building. A temporary shooting gallery was set up with 10 shooting stations and of course ten targets. When ten contestants had paid their fee, which I think was a dollar, they would either use a rifle provided or their own and shoot ten shots at their target. The person with the highest score would win a turkey.
In the 1950’s, Borculo had a rifle club which met in the Community Building where targets were set up on the East end and shooters were lined up on the West end of the building. I don’t know when that ended, but I think it was still active when I went off to college in 1958.
In the 1940’s, residences were so far apart that there was little worry about a bullet causing unwanted damage, so kids pretty much plinked without much careful thought about where that bullet might end up.
However, on each box of 50 shells was a warning that each bullet had a range of one mile. In the early ‘50s however, a stray bullet went through the window and into the bathroom wall at the Henry Geert’s residence. This was a signal that this free use of the 22 would be ending. Now, with many more residences having been built, one has to be very judicious in the use of a rifle!
