Getting that tractor was in many ways like kids getting an ATV today, and that is how we used it many times, just roaming around on our 40 acres of brush and sand holes. It did, however, do some real work too, like plowing the garden, cultivating the crops, pulling out errant trees, and pulling a trailer usually for gathering Christmas trees or just giving rides.
As I recall there did not seem to by any limits on our use. There was always gas in a 55 gallon barrel we could use. For the kids it was a wonderful machine. We had lots of free time, few neighbors, and only an encyclopedia Britannic to read besides the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs.
When the grand kids came along, they too loved putting around, and our son Gregg still remembers learning to shift it when he was young. I also know nephew Ross Fischer for years has been coveting a Farmall A.
When settling the estate, an auction was held to sell all of Mom and Dad's stuff. I think the hardest thing for us to get rid of was the tractor. It carried a lot of memories with it.
